Dual ecological balance sheet

  • Identifying the “ecological status quo” of a package also includes the question of what emissions and resource consumption levels are entailed by its “lifecycle”.
And: what “life phase” contributes to the overall result and how?
  • Full size LCAs (lifecycle analyses) are expensive, complicated and protracted. For most questions encountered in the context of packaging optimization, they are overdimensioned.

Analysis

Within the context of packaging optimization, we examine the “cradle to gate” aspect, and expand it to cover package-specific disposal paths.

Result

In order to identify critical areas (hot spots) and possible optimization approaches, calculating the usual key indicators will normally suffice, by comparing the impact of the “cradle to gate” phases to the potential amelioration in the disposal phase. The utilization phase is excluded from the examination.
