Producer Responsibility and
Der Grüne Punkt in Europe

In most EU member states, the European Framework Directive on Waste is being nationally implemented in accordance with the producer responsibility for commercially organized systems that organize the collection, sorting and recycling of the substances by proxy for the obliged producers. Most of these systems, brought together under the umbrella group PRO EUROPE, use the trademark "Der Grüne Punkt" as a financing symbol and thus signal to the end user that the circulators of the sales packaging assume their producer responsibility and contribute to the financing the recycling.  PRO EUROPE strives to prevent trade barriers and to promote cooperation between the members. Lobby work for relevant legislation processes and the harmonization of packaging recycling also belong to the focal tasks.

Producer responsibility: past, present and future

The first ever compliance system, the current "Der Grüne Punkt" - Duales System Germany GmbH, was founded in 1990. The trademark "Der Grüne Punkt" was the symbol for a new trend: extended producer responsibility (EPR). The creation of such systems based on producer responsibility has contributed to an increase of the recycling quotas and has become a decisive instrument in the field of environmental protection measures in Europe.
