IFAT 2018: giving plastic a value

Der Grüne Punkt understands marine life’s desperation / A genuine closed-cycle economy as an approach to the desolate state of the high seas

Cologne, Munich, 9 May 2018. Things with a value don’t get thrown away – it is from this simple insight that Der Grüne Punkt derives the strategy for a genuine closed-cycle economy for plastics. “It has to make financial sense to design plastic products for recyclability, to collect plastic waste separately and recycle it, and finally to use recycled plastic instead of new plastics in products,” is the summary from Michael Wiener, CEO of Der Grüne Punkt.

Der Grüne Punkt’s stand at the IFAT 2018 fair in Munich maps out approaches for how to do this: exhibits, videos and augmented-reality installations give experiential shape to the recycling of various materials and show innovative solutions and products. For its Systalen PRIMUS HDPE plastic recyclate, from which new sales packages for cleaning agents are manufactured, Der Grüne Punkt has just received one of the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe in Amsterdam.

The eye-catcher on the stand is an installation spotlighting the marine litter issue, crowned by a whale’s fin. “Gigantic quantities of plastic waste end up in the oceans every year, because there is no properly organized disposal and recovery pathway for them,” is how Michael Wiener describes the problem. “Giving them a value is in my view the most promising approach for combatting this.”

Path-breaking project together with Messe München

In conjunction with the fair organizer Messe München GmbH, Der Grüne Punkt has extended the “Donate Your Deposit” project to cover the IFAT as well. At many German airports, passengers will find large transparent collection bins from “Donate Your Deposit” for their empty beverage bottles. The deposits donated are passed on to a charity. The conspicuous collection bins can also be found everywhere at the IFAT 2018.

The fair organizers Messe München and Der Grüne Punkt have joined forces for this. Der Grüne Punkt handles retrieval of the containers collected, organization of the deposits, and the recycling of bottles and cans. “Recycling also has important social components,” emphasizes Michael Wiener. “This can be exemplarily demonstrated by “Donate Your Deposit”: the project rescues valuable raw materials for high-quality recycling, and thanks to the donations received opens up opportunities for important social projects.”
