Cologne, 14 May 2019. Great interim result after five years of “Donate your deposit”: at eight participating German airports, six million containers have so far been collected, and exchanged for 1.5 million euros in deposits. All of this money has been channelled into social projects. “This is a huge success not only for the people who benefit from this money, but also for the natural environment,” says a gratified Michael Wiener, CEO of Der Grüne Punkt. “Since it also means that six million bottles and cans have been recycled that would otherwise have probably ended up as waste.”
As almost everybody knows: at the security checks in airports, it’s the end of the road for beverage bottles. Most of them end up as waste. At eight German airports, though, passengers accordingly find for their empty beverage bottles large, transparent collection containers from “Donate your deposit”.
Most of the people who empty, clean and handle the containers are former long-time unemployed. They also sort the bottles into returnables and non-returnables, and pack them in special sacks. Der Grüne Punkt looks after everything else: i.e. collecting the sacks, organising the deposits, and recycling bottles and cans. Currently, 24 jobs can thus be created for deposit officers.
