Berlin/Cologne, 17 June 2019. At Schönefeld Airport, passengers can as of now donate their deposit bottles for the benefit of needy people in the region. The airport management company, Der Grüne Punkt, the educational and employment charity Goldnetz and the Berliner Tafel launched the shared “Donate your Deposit” project at Schönefeld Airport on 17 June 2019, and installed a total of eight collecting bins in departure terminals A, B, C and D. Two years ago, the nationwide deposit initiative was launched at Berlin-Tegel Airport, where so far more than 420,000 euros in donations have been collected for the Berliner Tafel. The shared initiative, moreover, has created 23 jobs for the long-term unemployed.
Inside the European Union, passengers embarking on a flight are allowed to take with them containers holding only up to 100 ml of liquid in their hand luggage. This means that beverage bottles are often emptied and disposed of before the security check. Passengers will accordingly find the new perspex collecting bins emblazoned with the message “Donate your Deposit” in the immediate vicinity of the security checks on the terminal’s departure levels. All returnable and non-returnable bottles are collected, irrespective of the deposit system from which they originate.
Besides supporting the projects of the Berliner Tafel, “Donate your Deposit” at Tegel and Schönefeld Airports offers employment prospects for the long-term unemployed. This is because emptying the bins regularly, cleaning them, and subsequent sorting of the containers concerned are the responsibility of deposit officers, specifically hired for the social project by Goldnetz gGmbH. With the aid of Der Grüne Punkt, the bottles are fed into the recycling circuit and the deposits are collected.
To quote Dr. Manfred Bobke-von Camen, Human Resources Director of the airport management company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The deposit bins are not only a practical service for our passengers, they also generate an impressive amount of donations for people in and around the capital who urgently need this support. At Tegel Airport, we were totally won over by the efficacy of “Donate your Deposit”, so now we’re delighted to launch the project in its tried-and-tested partnership at Schönefeld as well.”
To quote Norbert Völl, Press Spokesperson of Der Grüne Punkt: “We’re particularly pleased to help continue the success story of ‘Donate your Deposit’ at Tegel Airport now at Schönefeld Airport too. With their small donations, passengers can make a large impact and encourage recycling – this renders the project so sustainable.”
Karin Pfluger, Deputy Managing Director of Goldnetz gGmbH, says: “We’re very proud that we can now offer passengers an opportunity to return their deposit bottles to the recovery cycle at Schönefeld Airport as well. This means the deposit money, which was previously thrown away, now benefits a worthwhile charitable cause and reduces environmental impact into the bargain. What’s more, the project provides long-term job-seekers with access to a job (and social insurance) on a full or part-time basis on the general labor market. Our deposit officers have taken this project fully on board, and are already looking forward to busily collecting the bottles at Schönefeld Airport too.”
To quote Sabine Werth, founder and Chairperson of Berliner Tafel e.V.: “‘Donate your Deposit’ is a brilliant project, because it successfully combines sustainability with social involvement. The Berliner Tafel is delighted to be one of the cooperating partners! We support 125,000 people in need a month with food, and finance our work solely through donations and member’s fees. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who supports us!”
