Cologne, 5 September 2019. How can customers of Der Grüne Punkt follow the example of their competitors and become front-runners of the closed-cycle economy? A question addressed at the 11th Grüner Punkt Forum, attended yesterday by more than 100 participants in Cologne’s Flora Botanical Gardens. Representatives of manufacturers and retailers, experts from consultancy firms and the academic community, and specialists from Der Grüne Punkt discussed the challenges and strategies involved in the closed-cycle economy.
A lot has already been achieved, emphasized Michael Wiener, CEO of Der Grüne Punkt, in his opening address, but: “We’re still a long way away from a genuine closed-cycle economy for plastic – and that’s why we’re here today.” Recyclates, he continued, are nowadays unprecedentedly sophisticated and applicationally versatile, and: “Consumers are receptive to recyclates as never before.” Michael Wiener called upon the company representatives present to embrace their entrepreneurial mindset and seize the opportunity offered by the closed-cycle economy.
Der Grüne Punkt supports them in this with numerous services. At the forum, participants could familiarize themselves, for example, with the RecyclingCOMPASS developed by Der Grüne Punkt. The digital tool provides in a few brief steps an initial classification of recyclability in the German system. “This means it will be very easy for our customers to assess their current status in terms of design for recycling,” says Jörg Deppmeyer, General Manager at Der Grüne Punkt. “It could hardly be simpler. Our experts back up this capability with customized analyses and the appropriate consultancy.”
The RecyclingCOMPASS will be online in its full version by the first half of September 2019, and will already incorporate the recently published minimum standard of recyclability laid down by the Central Packaging Registry. It covers not only packages made of plastic and metals, but also fiber-based packages – a special feature in comparison to other systems. A further stage of expansion will feature an extension of the results to other European countries and a complete evaluation capability for packages made of glass as well.
