Decision from the climate cabinet: ministers ignore potentials of the circular economy

Cologne/Berlin, 20 September 2019. In the action package unveiled by the climate cabinet, the circular economy has been relegated to a footnote. While the climate cabinet, chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel, has laid down detailed measures for the transportation and residential sectors, when it comes to the issue of the circular economy, the ministers contented themselves with a few empty phrases.

“As one of the most seminal branches of industry for the future, the circular economy receives by far the least attention in the action package – that in itself is pretty steep,” criticizes Michael Wiener, CEO of Der Grüne Punkt. “The circular economy saves CO2, economizes on valuable resources, and creates up-to-the-future jobs. Anyone ignoring this potential is being short-sighted.”

The action package sees potential solely “in the aerobic stabilization of landfills through aeration”. “A mandatory utilization rate for recycled plastic, for example, with which we could make a significant contribution towards resource-economy and climate protection, is missing entirely,” remonstrates Michael Wiener.

With the measures mapped out, the German federal government aims to put in place the preconditions for enabling Germany to meet the climate targets by 2030. In the upcoming months, the federal government and parliament will be preparing and passing corresponding legislation. “It would be a disastrous signal if the ministries responsible were to continue to ignore the value of the circular economy, and the urgently necessary political support for the circular economy fails to materialize,” said Michael Wiener.
