Update for the RecyclingCOMPASS

Der Grüne Punkt presents an update of its user-friendly digital tool for classifying recyclability

Cologne, 14 October 2020. Der Grüne Punkt has presented an update of the RecyclingCOMPASS, a tool that makes it easy for customers to obtain a scientifically sound assessment of their packaging’s recyclability. “The RecyclingCOMPASS is by no means a static tool, but a dynamic one, and we’ve been continually upgrading it since 2018,” says Jörg Deppmeyer, General Manager at Der Grüne Punkt. “With the RecyclingCOMPASS, our customers are always on top of the game as far as the recyclability of their packaging is concerned.”

To be more specific, Der Grüne Punkt has updated the online tool to the latest minimum standard published by the Central Packaging Registry in early September 2020. The tool’s assessment is based on the method of the cyclos-HTP Institute (CHI).

RecyclingCOMPASS as a simple and mature tool

In order to support manufacturers, not least in terms of recycling-friendly design of their packaging, Der Grüne Punkt has developed the RecyclingCOMPASS, a digital tool that in a few steps provides a classification of recyclability in the German system. “This means it’s very easy for our customers to estimate where they stand in terms of Design for Recycling,” to quote Jörg Deppmeyer.

Recycling-friendly plastic packages that remain in the closed-cycle economy instead of being incinerated can make a vital contribution towards correcting plastic’s poor image. The retail sector is also calling for improved recyclability and is developing appropriate strategies. For manufacturers, it is manifestly not so simple to estimate the recyclability of their packaging easily yet dependably. The RecyclingCOMPASS is an important digital aid here – together with the result, it displays for the user a precise explanation of the result concerned, which can provide him with initial hints for optimization. The tool is being continually updated on the basis of the applicable standards.

Despite the complexity of the data involved, the RecyclingCOMPASS continues to be practical and very easy to use. All types of packaging made of plastic, metal or fiber-based materials can be tested for recyclability in a few entry steps, after which an assessment report can be created. Recyclability is classified, using six different clusters.

Not only does the RecyclingCOMPASS enable its users to achieve potential cost savings, it also helps to minimise a packaging’s ecological footprint.
