Cologne, 28 April 2020. Just like many other large German companies, Der Grüne Punkt is also dedicated to ensuring that all measures are taken so as to render Europe climate-neutral by 2050. “When we due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis put climate protection and the transformation towards sustainable management on the back burner, the subsequent crises will eclipse everything we’re experiencing now,” emphasizes Michael Wiener, CEO of Der Grüne Punkt. This, he continues, also refers to the economic consequences.
Yesterday, Frans Timmermanns, the Vice-President of the EU Commission, had in a video message pinpointed the fact that the Green Deal will not only render Europe climate-neutral but likewise constitutes THE quintessential growth strategy for Europe. In the statement she gave at the 11th Petersberg Climate Dialog, Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel emphasized that a free-market approach to climate protection had to be used, including above all appropriate pricing for CO2 consumption. There could not be, she continued, a sustainable development at the expense of individual sustainability targets.
Michael Wiener concurs: “In the long run, Europe will have a chance on the global markets only when it assures sustainable management and prepares appropriately for any challenges that the future may hold. As one of the most important strategies of future relevance, the circular economy is definitely indispensable in this context.”
Endeavours made by some in the business community, to review climate targets and to put the circular economy on the back burner, too, are emphatically rejected by Michael Wiener: “The circular economy’s potential for climate protection is a long way from being exhausted. What’s more, we’re likewise ignoring the business opportunities offered by the circular economy. A circular economy fully worthy of its name creates jobs and brings added value into the European Union, which we urgently need.”
