With its latest publication Analysis and Further Development of the Recycling Rates in the Packaging Act as a Steering Instrument for Resource Conservation” (only available in German) the German Environment Agency (UBA) is sending a strong signal for greater resource efficiency and improved recycling in Germany.  The focus is on the UBA's proposal to increase the recycling rate for plastic packaging from the current 63 percent to 70 percent in the future.

Der Grüne Punkt fully supports this objective. Together with its partners and customers, the company already meets the targeted 70 percent rate, demonstrating that ambitious recycling goals are both realistic and achievable.

A key aspect of the publication is the outlook for 2030, which includes a differentiated approach to mechanical and chemical recycling processes. This development opens new perspectives for plastic recycling and gives fresh momentum to the circular economy. A comprehensive mix of recycling technologies is intended to contribute to a long-term goal of reaching an almost 100 percent recycling rate for plastics.

Rising recycling rates strengthen the circular economy, and chemical recycling can help close important gaps in the process. A technology-neutral approach is essential to fully unlock innovation potential and combine ecological and economic solutions effectively.

To implement the new targets successfully, a reliable legal framework, investment security, and demand-side incentives are required. Only under these conditions can the transition to a resource-efficient, future-proof circular economy succeed.
