Cologne, 28 October 2020. Separating waste correctly is an important precondition for recycling. But how can consumers tell if a packaging is recyclable at all? With plastic packaging, in particular, this is almost impossible without the requisite expert knowledge – and there is a conspicuous lack of appropriate dependable labelling.
However, this is now going to change: The new label – Recyclable – from Der Grüne Punkt confirms a packaging’s excellent recyclability. The label will be issued only for packaging that meets a number of stringent conditions:
- There is an efficient collection system in place, so the packaging can be properly disposed of after use (Yellow Bin, Yellow Sack, drop-off containers).
- It must be possible for the machines in the sorting plants available to identify the packaging and sort it into the correct sorting fraction.
- The content of re-usable materials must be available for high-quality recycling, e.g. for a recycled plastic like Systalen.
- The cyclos-HTP Institute has confirmed a recyclability of more than 90 percent.
“With this new label – Recyclable – consumers now have a marking they can rely on because it is backed by soundly substantiated certification,” explains Jörg Deppmeyer, Managing Director of Der Grüne Punkt. “Our label creates the transparency consumers have been looking for and shows them that the packaging in question has been designed for recycling – now it’s up to them to see to correct separation.”
The cyclos-HTP Institute, the partner of Der Grüne Punkt, was founded in May 2014 as a company tasked with classification, assessment and certification of the recyclability of packaging and goods and with research and development in this field, by the shareholders of cyclos GmbH and the engineering firm HTP GmbH & Co. KG headquartered in Aachen. The institute’s Managing Directors are Sandra Beckamp and Dr.-Ing. Joachim Christiani, one of Europe’s leading experts in the field of sorting and recovery technology.
