BKV GmbH has presented a new market study ‘Status quo and forecast of demand for and availability of post-consumer recyclates in 2030’ in collaboration with Conversio Market & Strategy GmbH. It warns of a serious shortage of recycled plastic in Germany and Europe.
In the packaging sector, the recently adopted Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) stipulates ambitious recyclate utilisation rates for 2030 and 2040, which require high quantities of recycled material. ‘Without significant additional investment in mechanical and chemical recycling, there will be a supply gap of just under 30% (861 tonnes) in Germany by 2030,’ the authors say. A summary of the study in German can be found here.
The study underlines that without accelerated development of recycling capacities, the demand for recycled plastic cannot be met. Experts are therefore calling for increased investment in recycling technologies and infrastructures as well as political measures to promote the use of recyclates.
With Systalen®, Der Grüne Punkt, a leading provider of plastic recyclates, is already setting an example for a functioning circular economy. Systalen® stands for high-quality recyclates, which are obtained from plastic waste collected from households and reutilised for a variety of applications. One example of the successful use of high-quality recycled material in sustainable packaging solutions is the two-time award-winning stretch hood project of Der Grüne Punkt in collaboration with Nestlé Deutschland AG and DUO PLAST AG.
By using recyclates, companies can not only conserve resources, but also actively contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions. Systalen® offers a reliable alternative to primary plastics and supports the industry in efficiently achieving its sustainability goals.
