Cologne, 26 March 2021. Producers of plastic packaging in Germany are complaining about their raw material being expensive and in short supply: The plastics manufacturers increasingly deliver their goods to China where the economy is on the rebound and raw materials are in demand, so higher prices are paid. That leaves German companies out in the cold – they can scarcely obtain enough supplies and have to put up with much higher costs.
Recyclates may constitute an alternative here – but these have so far hardly been used for packaging. And this is where a product innovation from Der Grüne Punkt fits in perfectly: The company joined forces with W. Müller GmbH, and together they have succeeded in developing a bottle made of Systalen® LDPE, a plastic that is produced using a new system technology specifically developed for top-quality LDPE applications.
Der Grüne Punkt obtains the raw material in question – low-density polyethylene (LDPE) – from film waste from the yellow sack and the yellow bin, in which in Germany used sales packaging made of plastics, metals and composites are being collected. As confirmed in initial tests, the bottles score highly not only in terms of an attractive surface and a minimum of unpleasant odors but above all in terms of high mechanical strength, which is the result of a recipe developed specifically for this bottle.
“Not only do the bottles constitute an affordable alternative to those made of virgin material, they are also significantly more sustainable into the bargain since they are produced from post-consumer waste,” emphasizes Jörg Deppmeyer, Managing Director of Der Grüne Punkt. “Users can even apply for these bottles to carry the Blue Angel because they are resource-economical and our Systalen® has got the relevant certification.” The bottles can be used for packaging cleaning agents or other liquid products, such as fertilizer, for example. When they are empty, they are collected in the yellow sack together with other lightweight packaging and can then be recycled again.
The gray color is produced by the mixture of different colors in the packaging waste material. But thanks to the special blow-molding technology used by W. Müller GmbH, the bottles can also be manufactured in a three-layer process where thin coatings of virgin material are applied as the inner and outer layers, which can then be dyed in any color desired. “That offers almost unlimited options for expanding the range of applications,” to quote Jörg Deppmeyer. “It gives the industry a fair bit of independence when it comes to sourcing their raw material.”
