The Systec Plastics recycling plants at production sites in Hörstel and Eisfeld manufacture granulates and compounds from polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP). The raw materials for this come exclusively from household collection (yellow bin/yellow bag) for packaging waste.
The model used to determine the eco-profile for LDPE and PP at the recycling plants corresponds to the Umberto® material flow software (currently version U5.6), which was also calculated by the ifeu Institute for Energy and Environmental Research.
The Umberto model maps all processes along the product life cycle: from the collection of plastic waste by yellow bins/yellow bags, sorting in LWP sorting plants, to the production of recyclates in the respective recycling plants. The disposal of all sorting and processing residues is also taken into account in the life cycle assessment systems until complete elimination or until secondary raw materials (with neutral or positive market value) are obtained.
The eco-profiles are not calculated annually, but only after significant changes have been made to the recycling plants.
