Successful management and responsible action

Responsibility for people and the environment defines DSD Group business activities. If our sustainable business model “We close material cycles” is to succeed in the long term, we must achieve a sustainable balance between economic, environmental and social requirements.

Since the market environment possesses crucial importance for DSD, it complements as an autonomous perspective the three “classical” dimensions of sustainability. Thus, DSD underlines firstly its own aspiration to have a lasting impact on the market, and thus meaningfully progress the thrust towards a closed-cycle economy. Secondly, this dimension reflects the overwhelming relevance of the political-regulatory environment and fair rules.

Fields of action

The fields of action defined continue to constitute the principal focus of Duales System Holding’s sustainability strategy:

  • Ensuring corporate success and prospects thanks to sustainable growth and future-driven business practices
  • Systematically and steadily optimizing the quality of processes, products and services
  • Satisfying our customers' wishes to the best possible effect
  • Developing staff in the growth process and safeguarding jobs – with performance-focused remuneration and socially compatible framework conditions
  • Proactively accepting and progressing our responsibilities for the natural environment and society as a whole
  • Downsizing energy consumption before 2020 by a double-figure percentage
  • Introducing and upgrading energy, quality and eco-management systems, so as to continually reduce environmental impact

In addition, two further fields of action are gaining steadily in perceived relevance:

  • Expanding our business operations by providing extensive services for participating customers and disposal companies, with comprehensive consultancy and upgrading of the services involved
  • Increasing efficiency by networking players and processes along the value creation chain

How well can particular packages be recycled? What can the manufacturer take into account at the early design stage for a new package, in order to facilitate subsequent recycling? How can manufacturers themselves benefit from this? When it comes to design for recycling (D4R), DSD supports its customers in a consultancy role, and provides companies with comprehensive advice on issues relating to the recyclability of their packages, e.g., with workshops for experts and customized sorting trials.

Optimizing the value creation chain

To ensure that reusable materials can be efficiently incorporated in maximally closed cycles, a holistic approach is vital: where are waste and non-recyclables generated? How can these best be collected and recovered? Where can the substances concerned then be reused? These questions have to be addressed and answered in conjunction, so that the individual steps involved in value creation can be coordinated to optimum effect.

As a link in this chain, dual systems, and chief among them Der Grüne Punkt as the market leader, play a crucial role: thanks to close interfacing with manufacturers and the retail sector, on the one hand, and the sorting and recovery companies, on the other, the dual systems ensure that recycled materials, obtained from old products and packages, are used in new products and packages - and that these are designed in such a way that they are optimally amenable to recycling.
